In human society and its environment (HSIE), both subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
HSIE Faculty:
The HSIE (Human Society and Its Environment) Faculty provides students with a deep understanding of the world through the study of History, Geography, Business Studies, Legal Studies, Ancient History, Society and Culture, and various elective subjects. These courses develop critical thinking, research skills, and a strong understanding of society, culture, and the environment—essential for navigating the complexities of the modern world.
Years 7-10: Core Subjects
History
Students explore significant historical events, individuals, and movements that have shaped societies from ancient to modern times. They develop skills in historical inquiry, source analysis, critical thinking, and constructing evidence-based arguments.
Geography
Students investigate global and local issues, including environmental sustainability, urbanisation, and human interactions with landscapes. They develop skills in geographical inquiry, spatial technologies, and data interpretation to understand and respond to real-world challenges.
Years 9-10: Elective Subjects
Elective History
For students passionate about the past, Elective History provides a deeper exploration of historical themes, including archaeology, myths and legends, military history, and controversial historical debates. Students refine their historical research, source analysis, and extended writing skills.
Commerce
Commerce introduces students to the world of business, personal finance, consumer rights, and the legal system. They develop financial literacy, problem-solving abilities, and decision-making skills relevant to real-world economic and legal situations.
Japanese
Students learn Japanese language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They also explore Japanese culture, traditions, and society, enhancing their intercultural understanding and communication skills in a globalised world.
Psychology
Psychology introduces students to the study of human behaviour, mental processes, and social influences. Topics include cognitive psychology, personality theories, mental health, and forensic psychology. Students develop analytical skills and an understanding of scientific research methods.
Stage 6: Senior HSIE Subjects
Business Studies: Examines business operations, management, and decision-making, developing skills in financial analysis, problem-solving, and strategic thinking.
Legal Studies: Explores the structure and function of the legal system, rights and responsibilities, and contemporary legal issues. Students develop case analysis and legal research skills.
Ancient History: Investigates ancient societies, cultures, and significant events using historical sources and archaeological evidence.
Society and Culture: Examines cultural diversity, social structures, and contemporary societal issues, developing skills in social research and human behaviour analysis.
