Kanahooka High School has proudly to partnered with Creating Chances for almost a decade to deliver sport coaching and leadership programs that provide meaningful connections and real-world experience for our senior students. Starting in Years 9 & 10, students go through an application process to secure a spot in a range of programs offered by Creating Chances throughout the school year. Each program centres its focus around building stronger student voice, youth empowerment through sport, and promoting social change, encouraging our students to explore more ways they can positively impact our school culture.
Through this partnership each school year our successful Year 10 applicants have the opportunity to work with local primary schools by running weekly sport and physical activity sessions. This hands-on experience helps our students develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills while building positive relationships with younger students in our community.
For our Stage 6 students who have completed Creating Chances programs in Year 10, there is a unique pathway to apply for a School-Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) with the organisation. Successful applicants work one day a week across schools in the Illawarra, gaining valuable experience and completing a Certificate III in Sports Coaching. At the completion of every program, students receive opportunities for job references, a certificate to include in their CV, and the confidence to make a direct impact in our local community.
Our school is also engaged with the Growing Great Teachers program. It is offered to any Stage 6 students interested in teaching or support staff roles (such as SLSO), offering hands-on experience, leadership development, and exposure to classroom practice. The program is designed to inspire and support students to pursue a career in education through stronger connections with our local community of schools and the University of Wollongong. The program offers access to university engagement, early entry opportunities, and scholarships. With the overall aim to equip students with valuable employment skills and a clear pathway into teaching or school support roles.
