Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

We wish to advise you that a student in our school community is currently receiving medical treatment for Leukaemia. This student will be attending school on occasion while recovering from and undergoing treatment.

As a consequence of treatment, this student’s ongoing health is at risk if they come into contact with infectious illnesses, in particular; Whooping Cough, Shingles, Chicken Pox, Measles or Mumps.

If your child is suspected of having one of these illnesses it is very important that they do not attend school.

It is also important that while your child is unwell, that they remain at home until they are no longer contagious. Information on infectious conditions can be found on national health websites eg. www.health.gov.au or alternatively contact your local GP.

If your child has Whooping Cough, Shingles, Chicken Pox, Measles or Mumps or is suspected of having an illness, then please contact the school immediately. This will allow the school to assess the probable contact and therefore exposure of our student to the disease. Notification can then be given to the parents and medical specialists.

As a school community we value your support in relation to the wellbeing of all of our students. Please do not hesitate to contact Ms Jocelyn Burns if you have any questions.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Premier's Debating Challenge

The Year 9/10 team in the Premier's Debating Challenge faced their first debate on Thursday 23rd of May, against Illawarra Sports High School.

The topic for the debate was "That universities should have a 50% quota for females in STEM subjects".

Kanahooka argued the affirmative case, explaingin that quotas were essential to ensure equality, while Lake Illawarra argued the negative case, that natural correction would occur by doing nothing.

It was a complex debate, and well argued. The adjudicator ultimately gave the debate to Illawarra Sports High, as they argued their case consistently throughout the debate.

Chelsea, Xander, Michael, Jye, Glen, Will, Lyndon and Joel all learned a huge amount of new skills while particpating int he debate. We would like to thank Mr Wassink and his students for sharing a fantastic day.

Watch this space for the next debate results. We compete against Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts on Wednesday 3rd of July.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

This Friday 15 March is the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence (NDA). As you know, bullying is a significant issue for some students at Kanahooka High School, and around Australia.

This year, our school is supporting this National Day of Action by providing students and the community with tools and resources surrounding this issue, as well as giving students the opportunity to discuss the topic and make a commitment to take a stand against bullying.

Whooping cough

A case of Whooping Cough has been confirmed in a child from Kanahooka High School.

· Whooping cough can be a very serious illness for babies

· You can still get whooping cough even if you are vaccinated

· Please take this letter to your doctor if you or your child are coughing

It is important to look out for these symptoms in you and your child over the next 3 weeks:

- Dry cough

- Cough often worse at night and comes in bouts

- Sore throat

- Runny nose

Note: the “whoop” sound is often not heard in older children and adults

What should I do if my child is coughing?

If you or your child starts coughing please go to your doctor to be tested for Whooping Cough. This is extremely important if there is a baby less than 6 months of age living in your household. Anyone who is being tested for Whooping Cough should remain at home until the results are available.

Whooping Cough can be a very serious illness for small children, especially babies under twelve months old.

How is it tested?

Whooping Cough is tested by a throat or nose swab.

How is it treated?

Whooping Cough is a respiratory illness which is treated with a course of antibiotics. To prevent the spread to others, anyone with Whooping Cough should remain at home until they have had the first five days of antibiotics.

How is it prevented?

Vaccination is the best prevention for Whooping Cough. However, the vaccination for Whooping Cough is not 100% effective and you can still get Whooping Cough even if you are vaccinated. NSW Health recommends an adult booster vaccine every 10 years to protect from Diphtheria, Tetanus and Whooping Cough (Pertussis).

Need more information?

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Dance Workshop

This term we held another Dance Workshop, this time in the style of modern/ contemporary. We were lucky enough to secure Airu Matsuda, a very talented and outstanding choreographer from Sydney. He attends Ev and Bow (a fulltime dance institution located in Sydney) and is mentored by Sarah Boulter, an illustrious choreographer and well- known supporter of Dance.

The students who attended were completely blown away with Airu’s standard of choreography and ability to perform. The students were led through a warm- up and learnt a choreography sequence, where they received some incredible opportunities to perform with expression which both challenged and motivated them. There were a number of students who attended from local Primary and High Schools within the Dapto area, which was also fun for our students.

Overall the afternoon echoed success and we look forward to the next workshop in the near future. Well done to all involved.

Kanahooka High School's student dance ensemble wowed the years 5 and 6 students from Hayes Park Primary school with a showcase of some of the dance pieces the students from Kanahooka had been working on in their electives.

The students demonstrated the sophisticated choreography and ability to tell a story through physical expression. Of special note was 'The Challenger', a dance which honoured and told the story of the Challenger shuttle disaster.

The students from Hayes Park were really appreciative and enjoyed a short workshop afterwards, learning the moves to the Hairspray song 'You can't stop the beat'.

Everyone had a fantastic time. Huge thanks go to Miss Page for her tireless organisation and enthusiasm for promoting dance in Kanahooka High School.

Pertussis or Whooping Cough case at KHS

30/08/2016

Dear Parent or Guardian and staff,

A child from the Kanahooka High School has been diagnosed with pertussis (whooping cough). I am writing to provide advice and to ask that you watch out for the symptoms of pertussis in your child, especially over the next 3 weeks.

What is pertussis?

Pertussis is an infection of the respiratory tract that can cause bouts of coughing, sometimes breathing difficulties and vomiting. It can be a very serious infection in small children. The illness can last for many weeks. It usually starts with a snuffle or a cold.

What should people who are sick with pertussis do?

If your child or a family member develops symptoms, contact your family doctor as soon as possible and take this letter with you.

This is extremely important if there is a baby less than 12 months of age living in your household.

Your doctor can advise whether pertussis is likely and arrange for early treatment if needed. Treating people who have pertussis with antibiotics can stop the infection spreading, but is more effective if started early.

To help prevent this infection spreading, people who have been diagnosed with pertussis should not attend child care, school or work until they have completed the first 5 days of a course of the recommended antibiotics. If antibiotics cannot be taken, then they must stay away for 3 weeks after onset of the cough.

How is it prevented?

Vaccination is the most important way of reducing pertussis in our community. It is important to double check that your child is fully up to date with his or her immunisations against pertussis. If in doubt, please ask your doctor to check.

NSW Health recommends adult booster vaccine every 10 years to protect from Diphtheria, Tetanus and Whooping Cough.

Need more information?

For more information, please see the Pertussis Factsheet, or call the Public Health Unit on 02 4221 6700 or visit the NSW Health www.health.nsw.gov.au

If your child or a family member develops symptoms, contact your family doctor as soon as possible and take this letter with you.

This is extremely important if there is a baby less than 12 months of age living in your household.

The Max Potential Program has been running in the Illawarra since 2005. Kanahooka High School has been an active member of the program for the last 4 years.

This year we had 4 nominated students from our Year 11 cohort who were accepted into the Leadership Program. Aaron Senn, Maya Manning, Leonie Chung and Tarryn Billington.

The program offered 22 weeks of personal leadership development. The culmination of this came with students developing a community project designed to have a positive impact on their local community.

The Showcase evening held at Dapto Leagues club allowed the students to present their project with those from the other schools. Our Principal Ms Toohey attended the showcase and commented on the outstanding presentations by the students.

Sports Uniform Requirements

	22 July 2015

In 2014, following consultation with the Kanahooka High School P&C Association, a decision was made to allow students to wear the Kanahooka High School sport's uniform to school on a Thursday (sport's day) if they so desire.

Students who choose not to wear the Kanahooka High School sports uniform to school on sport's day will dress in the required Kanahooka High School uniform.

The Kanahooka High School sport's uniform consists of a Kanahooka High School sports shirt and Kanahooka High School sports shorts, both of which are available for purchase from the Kanahooka High School canteen. During cooler weather, on sport's days, students must also wear the correct coloured jumper/jacket (green or black for Years 7-9, red or black for Years 10-12).

Students who choose to wear tights on a sport's day must ensure that they wear the correct shorts or skirt over the tights.

We thank you for your continuing support of the Kanahooka High School Uniform Policy.

On the 18th May, 2015 Kanahooka High School Year 9 & 10 Debating Team attended Dapto High School to debate the proposition that "The news is a good source of information".

Despite a very disrupted week of preparation, students Imogen Clarke (from Yr. 7 - recruited at late notice), Tamarah Walton-Issa and Kiana Elford (from Yr. 10) and Sophia Poole (Yr. 9 – also recruited at late notice) gave the debate their very best. They overcame any nerves and spoke with great conviction and persuasiveness. Although narrowly defeated by the Dapto debating team, the girls did Kanahooka very proud and received a cheque for $300.00 generously donated by the Rotary Club of Dapto. The day served as excellent preparation for future debates against other schools in our area and hope to return victorious very soon.

The following day (19th May), the Kanahooka High School Year 9 & 10 Debating Team travelled to Albion Park High School to debate the proposition that "School sport should be abolished". The girls were allowed an hour's preparation before having to each speak for 6-8 minutes in front of an audience of approximately 20 students and teachers. Again the team presented strong arguments in favour of banning school sport. Particularly pleasing was the ease and conviction with which Kanahooka students spoke in public – a very valuable skill in their future careers. Unfortunately the girls were defeated by the more experienced team from Albion Park High School. However, all girls benefitted from the experience and are clearly growing in competence at the art of debating.

The team will take part in two more debates next month against Lake Illawarra High School and Dapto High School. We wish them every success and know that they are excellent representatives for our school.

The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many others in the state, will participate in a Department of Education and Communities initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 9 March and 2 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 27 February. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from the website above.

Senior Student Information Night

Kanahooka High School is initiating a series of supportive information evenings for students, parents &caregivers embarking on the journey of Senior Studies and the HSC. The first of these will be held on Tuesday 25th November in the school library from 6.00pm – 7.15pm.

You will be given helpful information on how to cope with the rigors of study in the senior years. Many of our students are the first child within their family to be attempting the HSC. This will bring with it all types of challenges; harder subjects, higher level assessment tasks, time management, home study, extra curricula activities, casual work, home responsibilities and balancing social activities.

There will be a short supper followed by a series of brief talks aimed to assist those involved in the HSC. Let's face it, it's not only the students who have to cope, it's everyone around them! Faculty staff teaching senior courses will be available to discuss anything about their subject you may want to know.

Topics to be spoken about are:

		· Principal's Rap

A goody bag will be distributed to each family. There's even going to be a lucky door prize!

Please fill out and return the slip below to Mr Philpot by Friday 21st November.

Year 12 Kanahooka High School Indigenous student Morgan Kill was a fitting student ambassador as the Student Principal of the Day (SP4D).

SP4D is a national initiative of the Principals Australia Institute. On June 4 2014, Morgan joined primary and secondary students across Australia getting the chance to:

					· Step into the shoes of "principal" for a day.

					· Contribute to a national online student conversation.

Morgan had the chance to participate in a tour of classrooms and facilities at Kanahooka High School and offer her suggestions on improvements that could be made. She inspected the new hospitality facilities and was interviewed for WIN news.

Morgan said that she enjoyed the opportunity to be involved in a practical and exciting leadership development initiative and said that the be a leader, you must be different, otherwise there would be no leaders.

We are pleased to announce that our students, Shaina Johnson, Yemaya Roughley-Hutchinson, Joshua Bell and Katrina Neall placed in the top two schools across the Illawarra.
Representative success

Kanahooka High School has incredibly talented students, and our current representative students are making us very proud.

Towards the end of last term Mr Jardine and Miss Dean took a boys team and a girls team to the regional Touch Football gala day. This carnival served as a chance for the South Coast team selectors to cast their eye over the talent on display and to pick a group of players to trial for the South Coast representative team.

Kanahooka High was lucky enough to have five players selected to trial, those students are, Tiarne Carpenter, Monique Hasiuk, Paul Hasiuk, Jacob Wolhar and Josh Childs.

Kanahooka High School also wants to congratulate the amazing success of Macey Boyd, who represented in the Australian team at the World Dance Competition in Florida at the end of the holidays. All of Macey's teams were incredibly successful against the tough competitors from countries as diverse as Ecuador, England, Japan and the USA. Australia is now ranked third in the world from this competition. Congratulations Macey!

We'd also like to celebrate the success of Julian Veleski and Rilee Wagner who have travelled to Barcelona to represent Australia in futsal. Congratulations!

Congratulations to Dean Pender on his selection for the South Coast Regional Soccer team for the second year in a row. We wish him the best of luck in the championships this May in Rooty Hill.

And finally Jake Bell was selected to compete in the NSW/CHS under 15 Rugby League Championships, which are happening this week. Congratulations Jake.

Kanahooka High School is extremely proud of these students and their wonderful achievements.

Currently Year 7 students are studying the Fins, Fangs and Feathers Unit of work.

This unit allows for the teaching of a number of different text types by using an interesting theme. There are many engaging reading, listening, writing and speaking tasks contained within the unit, some focusing on literacy skills and others extending students to write sustained pieces of persuasive writing.

7S have thrown themselves enthusiastically into these activities. Part of the reading process was to use DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) to focus on a book that involves animals. Fiction or Non-Fiction, fact or fantasy, the students were to present a one minute talk about their book at a book party.
We had students in "onsies" as giraffes, bears, zebras...it looked liked the animals had escaped from the zoo. Some students bought in animal based food including dinosaur and book iced cupcakes, gummy bears, chicken chips, red frogs ... a delectable diet.
But this banquet did not distract from the learning process. Each student presented their book report while everyone else listened. It was a wonderful success story of students being positively engaged.
Special mention must go to Ms Goodwin from the English faculty who composed the unit of work. She created the unit for the new syllabus developed under The National Curriculum.

Bring Your Own Device

There has been a lot of discussion at the school about the roll out of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) which is replacing the Digital Education Revolution one-to-one laptop program. At this stage, the school is drafting a policy which will support the implementation of this program. We have also spoken about device specifications which students will be required to address if they choose to bring their own device to school.

There will be several options made available to parents and students, and we would like to see what parents think of the prospect of students' bringing their own devices to school. We have created a survey with some key questions concerning the implementation of BYOD at the school. Please take ten minutes to complete it. You can find the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9G9ND9H

The school will also be purchasing devices that students can use, much in the same way they currently access the computer labs.

If you would like to read more about BYOD, you can look at the Department of Education website here: http://byodsandpit.weebly.com/

We are delighted that our school has been selected to participate in a Department of Education and Communities pilot of the Tell Them From Me student survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW pilot project is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

The survey is conducted online and will take around 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 19 August and 6 September.

Most families would be aware of the importance of safe footwear for students attending Kanahooka Highs School. However, some students have started attending with footwear that is not safe.

As part of our Workplace Health and Safety guidelines, it is essential that students undertaking practical subjects such as woodwork, food technology, art, construction, metalwork, sport and physical education wear the correct foot wear to avoid potential injury. As this is a requirement for people working in industries such as construction and hospitality, it is important that students understand the importance of appropriate equipment and footwear early on.

Students who attend these subjects with inappropriate footwear will be excluded from the activity for safety reasons.

If you have further questions, you can find lots of information in the flyer and chart attached to this article. If there are any issues you wish to raise please contact the school.

	Writing Workshops with JC Burke

As a continuing focus on writing, young adult fiction author JC Burke came to the school on Wednesday to run writing workshops for students. She gave us a wonderful insight into her writing process, and how she researches her stories.

Students from year 6 to year 12 were able to attend the fascinating workshops. Big thanks go to Ms Goodwin and Ms O'Sullivan for helping organise the day, as well as Jane for coming all the way down to Kanahooka to provide us with a great series of workshops.

JC Burke books are available for order through the library, and will go to students signed by the author. For more information, please contact the school library.

The Illawarra is host once again to the annual Careers Expo, which celebrates its 31st year of operation.

The Illawarra Coal Regional Careers Expo is organised by Careers Advisers from local schools, and is aimed at students in Years 10 and 12 as they navigate their career and study choices.

All major Universities, Illawarra TAFE, many Private Providers, as well as a wide range of employers will be on hand to answer questions and provide information and advice.

Career management is such an important skill in today's world, and it's essential that young people take every opportunity to network face to face with employers and education providers.

Students can ask questions about pathways to education and employment, what opportunities there will be for particular careers in the future, non-traditional career options, and what skills and experiences would be of most value for their future.

Kanahooka High will attend the Careers Expo on Tuesday the 14th May.

We believe that family plays a very important role in supporting young people at this important time in their lives. Parents/ Guardians and students are encouraged to attend the Public Session, which is free of charge, on Tuesday evening from 4.00 - 6.30pm.

Helmets and students

The school has noticed that there are a number of students who are riding bikes and skateboards to school without a helmet. The New South Wales helmet law came into effect from January 1st 1991 for adults and from July 1st 1991 for children under 16. This law was introduced based on the known safety benefits, particularly in relation to preventing brain injury that may result from a fall or a crash.

It is compulsory for the rider of a bicycle on roads or road related areas to wear an approved bicycle helmet securely fitted and fastened on their head. This applies to all cyclists, regardless of age.

Kanahooka High School is aware of this issue and is trying to do all that is reasonable to address it. We are asking parents of students who ride bikes, scooters or skateboards to ensure they have an approved helmet and that they wear it while riding to and from school. If students don't comply, they may be asked to stop riding to and from school.

For more information about helmets, the legislation and the current information about bicycles and road use, please see the RTA website.

We all know that students learn best when they have had a nutritious breakfast to start the day. Students who have breakfast have greater concentration, more energy and are less likely to develop health concerns.

Breakfast Club is open at Kanahooka HIgh School every Tuesday from 7:30am until 8:25am. All students and staff are welcome to join us for a healthy breakfast to start the day. The program has recently moved from the 700 block, to room 302, which is located in the Science block.

So come and join us for breakfast!

With exams and assignments piling up, the KHS Tutorial Centre is there to help students achieve their best.

The Tutorial Centre has been open every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon in the library since the beginning of the year. It runs from 2:30pm until 3:30pm and offers students a chance to get extra help from teachers whilst completing homework, assignments or study for exams.

Last Wednesday students were treated to a special afternoon tea. Each Tuesday and Wednesday we offer students biscuits and juice to help fuel their extra study. The special afternoon tea was offered to the students who have been attending regularly.

Teachers attend from Maths, Science, English and HSIE faculties, as well as Languages and Library staff. Tutorial Centre is a great opportunity for students to get extra help, and achieve their best at school.

Impetigo (School Sores)

Unfortunately Kanahooka High has had recently diagnosed cases of school sores, or impetigo, amongst members of the school community.

Impetigo is an infection of the skin caused by the same or similar bacteria that causes boils. It appears as either small blisters or flat honey-coloured sores on the skin, hence the name "school sores".

More information about the condition and treatment can be found on the Westmead Children's Hospital website here:
Impetigo fact sheet

If your child should show any symptoms of impetigo or boils, please exclude them from school and consult a doctor for the most appropriate treatment. Please also remind your children, regardless of whether they have school sores or not, to wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet; before handling or eating food; and after blowing their nose.

If you have any further concerns, please contact your local health care provider.

Whooping cough alert

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Public Health Unit has informed the school that whooping cough, or pertussis, has been reported in the Illawarra area.

It is essential that parents and carers seek treatment for children who are suspected of having whooping cough. It is even more imperative at Kanahooka High School, as our Modified Education Program has mothers and very young babies visiting the school on a daily basis.

The symptoms of whooping cough can seem like an ordinary cold, however the cough may persist longer than an ordinary cold. The cough may also be followed with a gasp or 'whoop'.

If you suspect anyone in your family may be suffering from whooping cough, see your G.P. immediately to discuss testing and treatment.

For more information please read the factsheet located below.

Kanahooka High is evaluating our current system for reporting on student achievement to parents. We are running a survey amongst staff and students, and we are seeking feedback from parents concerning our current reporting system.

Are you happy with our reports? Or can you see room for improvement?

All constructive feedback will be considered and is much appreciated. The survey should only take 5- 10 minutes of your time. You'll find the link to the survey here: KHS Reports Survey

This survey closes on the 18th of February. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Did you know that emergency department presentations for asthma increase dramatically when children return to school in February?

It is essential for staff to be aware of your child's condition and for there to be a clearly detailed asthma action plan in your child's enrolment details.

See your G.P at the beginning of the year for an updated plan and forward this onto the school. That way, we can ensure that your child's asthma is being managed and treated in an effective and timely manner.

If you have any concerns or questions related to your child's asthma action plan please call 1300 792 755 and talk with some of the asthma education experts.

There seems to be a whole lot of stubble on upper lips at Kanahooka High School this week. That's because several of the male teachers are growing a mo for Movember to raise awareness and funds for men's health, in particular prostate cancer and depression.

We have a whole range of moustaches at the moment, hopefully we can get a gallery up soon.

Already, conversations are starting amongst staff and students about issues regarding men's health that are often not talked about. It's also great to see so many staff taking part to raise awareness.

If you would like to participate, but don't want to (or can't) grow a mo, you can donate! Every little bit helps. You can find our donation page here:

Moving into senior study can be a daunting prospect. With so many options, it can be hard to know what the best pathway can be for students. The Year 11 2013 subject selection evening on Tuesday 24th from 6pm is being held to assist parents and carers of KHS students to make good decisions when it comes to their teen's future pathway for study.

There will be presentations from each faculty, explaining the course requirements, and also teachers will be helping to explain the new process of students receiving a RoSA (Record of School Achievement) and what that means for students continuing their study.

If you would like to see what is on offer at Kanahooka High in 2013, please feel free to browse through the subject selection booklet linked below.

Medieval Revelry at KHS

Last Wednesday the main quad of Kanahooka High School was transformed into the courtyard of Castle Kanahooka as Year 8 Koala held their Medieval Night. Students dressed in medieval costumes and took part in an authentic medieval feast. The Town Crier, Courtney Maylin officially welcomed all the guests on behalf of King Noah and Queen Madison. The Royal Knights ( James, Mitchell, Dean and Ethan) provided protection from any invaders. Friar Kyle blessed the food and the Royal Executioner (Tyler Kelly) did not need to use his trusty axe.

There were some who spent time in the life sized stocks (thanks Mr Powell in Industrial Arts) and were pelted with wet sponges rather than the traditional rotten fruit. Entertainment was provided by the travelling minstrels ( Lauren Davis and Courtney McCann), while several tournaments including Archery and Sword Fighting took place.

Commoners and Blacksmiths ( Cameron and Cyrus) were also welcomed by the benevolent King. The Ladies of the Court ( Emma, Tanaya, Ashley) were elegant. Thankfully the spell cast by the good witch (Nicole) kept the weather fine. All in all, a great night was had by all. Congratulations to 8 Koala for the efforts in preparing for the night.

Mr Panecasio aka D'Artagnon

On Tues 23rd of November Mikajla McDonnell and Benjamin Smith were involved in the Dapto Lions Youth of the Year Competition. They had to go through an interview process and present speeches in front of an appreciative audience at the Dapto Showground. Competing against students from Illawarra Sports High and Dapto High School, both Mikajla and Ben were outstanding ambassadors for our school.

At the conclusion of the evening, the judges voted Mikajla as both overall winner and best speaker on the night. This puts Mikajla into the Regional Area finals to be held in 2011. Kanahooka High School has now won this title for the fourth consecutive year. Previous winners being Delfina Dimoski 2007-08, James Poole 2009 and now Mikajla McDonnell 2010. Congratulations to both Ben and Mikajla for their outstanding efforts in representing Kanahooka High School.

T.
KHS at Relay For Life

Last Saturday, the 18th of September, we joined other students from our school to be a part of the Kanahooka High School team in the Cancer Council's 2010 Relay for Life. A couple of weeks ago, our school had a guest speaker, Grace Favelle, an ambassador from the Cancer Council, come and share her experiences with us, this inspired us to become a part of this great cause, and help to fight back against cancer. We had the best time.

It really was such an inspirational day. We walked many laps at the Kerryn McCann Athletics Centre at Beaton Park, we also ran some. There was plenty of entertainment and the vibe in the air was very cheerfull and friendly. We didn't realise how many people are, and have been affected by cancer until we saw lots of them walking around with survivor sashes. It really made us realise just how lucky we are that we don't have to go through that and hopefully never will.

In total, our team raised over $600 from the sale of pink wrist bands and our mufti day. This money goes towards trying to find a much needed cure for this insidious disease which affects so many people. Next year we are hoping to get a lot more students from our school to register for the Relay for Life, because its something that you will never forget and it really is a fun day and a great experience.

By Elise Gersbach, Chloe Ward and Ben Smith

On Wednesday 8 September, Year 9 was lucky enough to receive

a special visit from Wayne Bennett, current coach of St George

Illawarra Dragons.

Wayne spoke to students about his upbringing, background and

some of the major influences throughout his life. He told us that

even though his circumstances and other people told him to give

up, he never lost sight of his dreams. He set himself three goals

to achieve even though he left school at 14 years of age and they

seemed impossible.

Wayne told students to never lose sight of what is possible,

believing in yourself and taking responsibility for yourself and

your actions are the key to achieving success. He left us with

powerful words...."You are the choices you make".

On behalf of Kanahooka High School, I would like to thank

Wayne for his inspirational words and for visiting our school at

such a busy time of the year and wish him luck in the NRL finals

this season. Ms A Morris

Kanahooka High School is embarking on a program aimed at creating a safer and more effective school: our Positive Behaviour for Success (PBS) program.

We have identified our core values as Excellence, Respect, Responsibility and Fairness and in order to promote the values of PBS we are asking our school community to design a logo.

The winner of the logo competition will receive a $100 gift voucher.

The logo entry must include the four value words, a picture or graphic that is significant to KHS, be representative of all groups in the school and be easily transferred to digital format for printing.

Keep your design to the size of an A4 page. If you need some ideas, check out the images at the end of this article.

Please note that the winning design will become property of KHS and will be used to promote PBS through a variety of media. Also note that the winning design may be altered to assist in replication and transferral.

If you have any extra questions please see Mr Mar or Ms Toohey.
